The Reading Scripture Well Toolkit: a SOAP study sheet, the toolkit cover and the fold-out trifold on a wooden table

Most of us were told to read the Bible. Very few of us were shown how.

You open to a passage. You read it once, then again. A verse jumps out, and you’re not sure whether it means what you think it means. So you close the book feeling a little more lost than when you started.

That isn’t a failure. It’s a missing tool.

The Reading Scripture Well Toolkit gives you that tool. It’s a short, printable set of pages that helps you slow down, notice what a passage is actually saying, and understand the world it was written in before you decide what it means for you. Start with them, then move to us, centered on Jesus.

What’s inside

Six pieces. One clearer way to begin.

  • A welcome letter

A short note from us to you: there’s no right order, no right pace, and no need to be perfect.

  • The OIA Method

Observation, Interpretation, Application. A time-tested way to read any passage, with the questions to ask at each step.

  • SOAP study sheets

Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer. One full-page sheet with guiding questions, plus two half-sheets you can cut apart and tuck into your Bible.

  • The Reading Scripture Well trifold

A fold-out guide to keep beside you while you study. It covers the three kinds of context, a five-step quick context method, every book of the Bible sorted by genre, ancient Near Eastern clues, helpful tools, and the common mistakes to watch out for.

  • A worked example

Romans 1:1–7, marked up the way we actually study, so you can see the questions in action.

  • A closing letter

Because finishing something small still matters.

Who it’s for

  • New believers who want to read the Bible but don’t know where to start.
  • Longtime Christians who were taught what to believe but never how to study.
  • Anyone who has read a verse and quietly wondered, “Is that really what it means?”

What it isn’t

It isn’t a reading plan to keep up with or a system to master. It doesn’t tell you what to conclude. It gives you the questions that help Scripture explain itself, so you can understand what you read and explain why you believe it.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need any background knowledge?

No. If you can read a paragraph and ask a question, you’re ready.

Do I need special tools or a study Bible?

No. The toolkit works with any Bible. If you’d like to go deeper, the trifold lists a few helpful tools, but none of them are required.

Which translation does it use?

Any translation works with the methods. Scripture printed in the toolkit is from the World English Bible (WEB).

Can I print more than one copy of the study sheets?

YES! You can print off as many pages as you need. We designed this to help people read Scripture well, so print what you need. If you feel led to buy more copies in order to support what we do, we won't limit that either.

How is this different from the ENGAGE workbook?

The toolkit is the first step: learning to read Scripture well, in context. The ENGAGE workbook builds on that with a full six-step method for studying, applying and explaining what you’ve read.
