The ENGAGE Method

Six steps. Any passage. For the rest of your life.

Most resources hand you their answers. ENGAGE teaches you to ask better questions — a repeatable pathway from understanding to obedience to witness that works on any passage of Scripture, long after the workbook is full.

The six movements

Each step below includes the worked example from the book of Ruth, so you can watch the whole method move through one real passage — a Moabite widow, an ordinary field, and the quiet providence of God.

E
Step 1 of 6

Examine the passage

Study what the text says and how it functions in context — author, audience, setting, flow.

The question: What does this passage actually say?

In practice · Ruth 2:1–13Ruth, a Moabite widow, gleans in Boaz's field under Israel's provision for the poor. Boaz hears of her loyalty, protects her, and names Yahweh as her refuge.
N
Step 2 of 6

Name the timeless truth

State the passage's central truth in clear, faithful language — before you make it about you.

The question: What is this passage teaching?

In practice · Ruth 2:1–13God's providential care often works through ordinary faithfulness, covenant kindness, and the responsible generosity of his people.
G
Step 3 of 6

Gather biblical references

Let nearby and related passages clarify, confirm, or qualify your understanding. Scripture interprets Scripture.

The question: How does the rest of the Bible speak to this?

In practice · Ruth 2:1–13Leviticus 19:9–10 explains gleaning; Psalm 91:1–4 echoes refuge under God's wings; Matthew 1:5 places Ruth inside Jesus' own family line.
A
Step 4 of 6

Assess your life honestly

Bring your beliefs, desires, habits, relationships, and decisions under the truth — your life, not someone else's.

The question: Where does this truth meet my actual life?

In practice · Ruth 2:1–13Do I notice vulnerable outsiders? Where might God already be providing through ordinary people, work, and faithful choices?
G
Step 5 of 6

Go in faithful obedience

Choose one specific response, trusting God's grace and the Spirit's help — obedience, not self-improvement.

The question: What will I do about it this week?

In practice · Ruth 2:1–13By God's grace, I will take one concrete step this week to protect, welcome, or provide for someone with less security than I have.
E
Step 6 of 6

Explain the truth clearly

Practice sharing what Scripture teaches, how it is shaping you, and how it connects to the good news of Jesus.

The question: Could I share this with someone else?

In practice · Ruth 2:1–13Ruth's story shows God's kindness reaching an outsider and moving the redemptive story toward Jesus. Where have you seen quiet kindness change someone's future?

A practice, not a performance

You may move back and forth between the steps. The goal is never to fill every blank — it's to listen carefully, respond faithfully, and become increasingly ready to share the hope you have.

Genre matters

Genre shapes the questions. Context governs the answers.

A psalm doesn't work like a legal code, and a parable doesn't work like a prophecy. Reading every page of the Bible the same way is how verses get pulled out of context. The workbook includes a worked example for all seven major biblical genres, so you can see how the same six steps flex — from Ruth's quiet narrative to Revelation's blazing hope.

NNarrative · Ruth 2
PPoetry · Psalm 13
WWisdom · Proverbs 3
PProphecy · Micah 6
GGospel · Mark 2
LLetter · James 1
AApocalyptic · Revelation 21

Step four, up close

Five lenses for honest application.

"Apply it to your life" is where most Bible study goes vague. ENGAGE makes it concrete — the Assess step examines your life through five specific lenses, so truth lands somewhere real.

M

Mind

What belief, assumption, or perspective needs to be affirmed, corrected, or developed?

H

Heart

What desire, fear, affection, motive, or attitude does this truth uncover?

H

Hands

What habit, decision, responsibility, or use of time and resources needs to change?

R

Relationships

Whom do I need to forgive, serve, encourage, or seek reconciliation with?

W

Witness

How could this truth make the character and work of Jesus more visible through my life and words?

If you already know SOAP, you're halfway home.

SOAP — Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer — taught a generation of believers to slow down with the text, and we honor it. ENGAGE keeps that devotional heart and adds the moves most of us were never taught: examining context before application, letting Scripture clarify Scripture, and practicing how to explain what you've found. If SOAP is a note in the margin, ENGAGE is the whole walk — from the text all the way to your Tuesday, and to the people in it.

Honest questions, honest answers

Is this another devotional?
No. A devotional hands you a thought for the day. ENGAGE is a framework — a repeatable set of moves that teaches you to study, understand, and apply Scripture for yourself. The goal is that you need the workbook less over time, not more.
Do I need a seminary background?
Not at all. ENGAGE was built for the ordinary believer at the kitchen table with an open Bible. If you can read a passage and answer honest questions about it, you can use the method.
How long does one pass through the method take?
Most people spend 20–40 unhurried minutes carrying one passage through all six steps. But it's a practice, not a performance — the goal is never to fill every blank. Move at the pace of honesty.
Which Bible translation does it use?
Workbook quotations come from the World English Bible (WEB), a trustworthy public-domain translation. The method itself works with whatever Bible you already read.
Can small groups and churches use it?
Yes — naturally. One passage carried through six movements gives a group a shared path and ready-made discussion. Churches can use it for small groups, discipleship classes, or new-believer training.
